About
Built by one person, not a venture-backed team.
Ascend Fitness is built in Auckland, New Zealand by Sam Wilson — a software engineer who got tired of quitting fitness apps by week three and decided to build the one he wanted.
Why a mountain.
Every other tracker reduces progress to a number on a chart. Numbers are easy to forget. Mountains aren’t. Ascend turns every workout, water log, and meal into elevation gained on a real mountain — Mt Cook, Denali, Everest, even Mars. You feel where you’ve been because you can see it.
The metaphor isn’t a gimmick. It’s a structural choice. Habit research is clear that streaks beat motivation. A visible climb that resets when you skip a week is a sharper accountability cue than a missed-day badge that disappears off the calendar.
Why one person.
A team of three would have shipped six months ago with twice the scope and half the polish. Ascend Fitness is small on purpose: every decision passes through a single brain that uses the app daily. No design-by-committee dashboards, no growth-hacker dark patterns, no ad SDK because someone’s OKR depended on it.
When you’re stuck or something’s broken, the person who replies to your email wrote the code that broke. That’s a feature.
What I won’t do.
- · Sell, rent, or share your training data. Not for ads. Not for insurance partners. Not ever.
- · Embed third-party analytics SDKs that fingerprint you across the web.
- · Lock basic tracking behind a paywall. Premium adds; it doesn’t remove.
- · Ship engagement traps designed to extract your time rather than serve your training.
